WOMEN'S HEALTH

Updated: Oct 22, 2020

Louise has a special interest in women's health and has gained experience in the TCM hospitals in Chengdu, China. Chinese Medicine has thousands of years experience in the fields of gynaecology and obstetrics and has real alternatives for women who do not wish to take conventional treatments for their complaints.

Louise has over 10 years of experience in treating a wide range of problems surrounding menstruation.  This can range from painful periods, heavy periods or no periods.

Painful periods (dysmenorrhoea) are a common and distressing condition.  There are two types of period pain, primary and secondary.  In most cases of primary dysmenorrhoea the cause is not certain although it is thought to be connected with high levels of prostaglandins, hormone-like substances that cause the uterus to contract, reducing its blood supply and increasing the sensitivity of nerve endings.  Secondary dysmenorrhoea is less common and is often a complication of other conditions such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or fibroids.

PREGNANCY

Having 3 children herself and experienced some of the associated problems that can occur during pregnancy, Louise is keen to help other women who struggle during these precious months.  Acupuncture is often the preferred choice, especially if treating nausea/vomiting, but herbs can be most helpful for a variety of other symptoms.  There is some solid research to show how Chinese medicine can help prevent miscarriage too.

Research has shown that a course of acupuncture prior to labour, pre-birth acupuncture, can reduce the length of labour.  Breech presentation is commonly treated using a method called moxibustion and some studies have shown an 80% success in turning babies.  The optimum time is 34 weeks but it is always worth trying.  Acupuncture for induction of labour can be effective within 3 to 60 hours of treatment, it helps to initiate contractions and ripen the cervix.

MENOPAUSE

Acupuncture and herbal medicine can be a real alternative to those who do not wish to take or who would like to come off HRT, and because they work to help the body rebalance itself there are no side effects unlike medications.  Chinese Medicine helps women to pass positively and smoothly into the next phase of life.
